I had a recent request asking if there was a way to add a Label to a plan, showing only the Northing and Easting for a property corner. This is a fairly common requirement of Planning Departments for final plan sets. If you look through the "Add Labels" dialog box, you wont see any mention of this, so I was surprised I hadn't had seen this request before.
This is actually quite easy to do in Civil 3D by simply adding a Point at your desired spot and assigning a Point Label Style to display only the coordinates.
First create a new Point Label Style from the Settings Tab of the Toolspace. Switch to the Layout Tab. If there are existing Components (Point Number, Elevation, Description, etc), you will want to delete these by hitting the red “X” button.
Still on the Layout Tab of the Point Label Style Composer, add a Text Component, and then click the ellipsis (…) of the Contents to open the Editor. Here I added a "N" and "E" and then included the corresponding Properties (Northing, Easting) for each by hitting the blue arrow. Make sure to set your Precision prior to inserting.
Back in the Layout Tab, I set the attachment point to "Top Left" and gave both the X & Y Offset a small value to improve the appearance.
Of course, these Points will be in their own Point Group, which has the new Style assigned to it, so go ahead and create this new Group now. I also set up the Group to include any Point with a Raw Description of “spot” (or similar).
Now, you just create Cogo Points for any location that you need a coordinate spot shot and give it the proper description (“spot”). I would suggest using a specific point range for your "Coordinate Points" as a good house keeping measure.
Make sure to include this new Style and Point Group in your Template! This would also be a great time to read the post that Almas wrote about using multiple Point Groups.
Enjoy!
