I have received an interesting case where one of our customers wanted to know if there is a way to create Civil points from a Grid Surface. With a little help from my friend Jason Hickey I was able to find a way to do it. I have to admit, it is not the most straightforward procedure, but it works. First, you would need to go into Settings tab and set transformation settings if you are using one. Then create a DEM surface, set visibility of the points in the surface style on, convert them to AutoCAD points and then convert them to Civil points. Here are the steps:
1. From Prospector tab, right click on Surfaces and choose "Create Surface from DEM," browse to DEM file and hit Open
2. Zoom Extents to see the DEM surface on the screen
3. Right-click on grid surface in Prospector tab and Edit Surface Style
4. In display tab turn only Points visibility On
5. Go to Surfaces > Utilities > Extract Objects from Surface (this will turn those points into AutoCAD points)
6. In Settings tab, expand Points > Commands
7. Right-click on CreatePoints, choose "Edit Command Settings"
8. Expand "Points Creation" and set value of Prompt for Description to Automatic (this way you will avoid being prompted to enter description for every point being converted)
9. Go to Points > Utilities > Convert from AutoCAD points
10. This will convert points to Civil points.
11. In Prospector tab click on Points node and note that there are points listed
Now we can go ahead and create TIN surface with these points if we wanted to. Enjoy!
