If you happen to be customizing your CUIX file and pointing Civil 3D to a newly created CUIX, named something other than C3D.CUIX, you may be suffering from these little question marks. When creating your CUIX file and saving as, say something creative like C3D-Seth.CUIX, you may forget about the two friends that accompany your shiny new CUIX file. The two files are C3D.DLL and C3D.MNR. They are located by default in the same location as the CUIX files:
- Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<<USER NAME>>\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D 2010\enu\Support
- Windows Vista & Windows 7: C:\Users\<<USER NAME>>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\C3D 2010\enu\Support
These two files contain the icon information for the Ribbon as well as Civil 3D’s two remaining toolbars, the Transparent Commands and the Transparent Command Filters. They will have to be named the same as your custom CUIX file, so they would now be called C3D-Seth.DLL and C3D-Seth.MNR. If you have all these set up and in place prior to launching Civil 3D, everything should go as planned.
The Transparent Command toolbars icons are stored in the .MNR file, which will be typically recreated if it is missing. So upon launching Civil 3D, if you have the CUIX and DLL file named appropriately, the MNR file will be created automatically with the same name. However If you just have the C3D-Seth.CUIX file in place WITHOUT the C3D-Seth.DLL, launch Civil 3D you will see that all icons now will be comprised of the nice little question marks.
Now for the twist in the story, if you go back, copy and rename the C3D-Seth.DLL file, restart Civil 3D all icons will be restored EXCEPT the Transparent Command Toolbars. To restore these icons to their glorious former selves, simply copy the existing C3D.MNR, rename it to match, and there will be no more guess to what question mark does what!
