One of the cool features of new Civil 3D is ability to have drawing remembers Data Shortcuts associations, in similar way Land Desktop used to do it. If you remember in Land Desktop days, user was able to open a drawing and and for instance, survey database was automatically available. Before, if you remember, you would need to open a drawing, in Prospector tab right-click on Data Shortcuts and set the path as desired. So the process had to be done for each drawing which some customers described as painful. You got the idea, right?
In Civil 3D 2011 there are two new commands added to the Data Shortcuts functionality to make them more project aware. I’ll take that back…these commands were available in Civil 3D 2010 but not visible, supported or documented (AssociateShortcutProject and AssociateProjectToDrawings). James Wedding wrote a nice detailed post about this, and I recommend that you all take a look at it. But let’s say it’s all new and move on.
Associate Project to Drawing enables you to specify a Data Shortcut project folder and to specify a folder containing drawings that are to be associated with one selected project. For each drawing file, the project selected is associated with the drawing. This means that Working Folder and current Data Shortcut folder will switch automatically when you open the drawing that is associated with project.
Associate Project To Multiple Drawings command is used when user wants to associate one project to multiple drawings contained in a specified folder on the file system. It can also be used to remove the project association from multiple drawings by setting the option to <none>.
Things to note:
- Projects can be renamed but unique ID associated with it will be remembered and association will be established.
- To publish Data Shortcuts drawing must be associated to the project.
- When you want to send drawing out there is no need to disassociate.
