Greetings from Las Vegas! I was able to sit in for a bit on Jason Hickey's class yesterday, and everybody seemed to really enjoy it. For those of you not here this year, I would strongly recommend watching it when it is available online. He had one of the best power point graphics (if not the best) in his presentation. If you saw it already, then you will know what I am talking about. Just keep an eye out for the "school bus".
I grabbed a quick picture of Jason working his magic at the tail end of his class, and in just about 24 hours I will be presenting in the same room. I am very much looking forward to sharing all of the hard work I put into this presentation, and I hope everyone enjoys it!
It’s official – Autodesk University 2011 is in full swing, and the first day isn’t even close to being over (It’s currently 4:14PM and we’re looking at around 8 more hours of scheduled commitments.)
Today I taught Improving Performance with AutoCAD Civil 3D and then co-presented Why You Shouldn’t Close You Map Task Pane All the Time in Civil 3D with Katie Jaques. The one thing people took away from my first class is that the skinny Map kids on the bus need to be beat up! I had a blast doing what I love doing most – talking to my peers about a subject that I’m passionate about.
Picture this room packed to standing room only and you’ll see just how many people are interested in improving performance with AutoCAD Civil 3D!
You can find me tomorrow at the AEC Technology Lounge answering customer questions – come on by with any questions or just to say hi!
Let’s talk about points, the grid, and the ground. Why not? All the surveyors are – everyone wants to project their grid points onto the ground, or vice versa, and so many users think that they’re doing the right thing when they’re really accomplishing nothing. Let’s take a look at the complete process for making this happen. Follow the link to read on…
Things like this does not happen very often and the main reason is that not many people work on Land Desktop projects anymore. But, only last week I have seen at least two customers with this issue. So what is the issue- you may ask? The issue is that some customers wanted to import the entire Land Desktop project into Civil 3D and as you all know by now, that's not really a problem anymore, since there is a command (found in Insert ribbon) that does just that – imports Land Desktop Project. This is why our user did and instead of nicely converted drawing he received a greeting one or more pIAlignments is Null! Errors or some other variation of the <object> is Null! error. To make thing more interesting it did not happen to all files or templates.
Why is this happening? Not sure about all possible reasons this error may occur but I am sure about the one. The Civil 3D template file may be having missing defaults or default styles.
As I mentioned before, this may happen to other object types but I will use alignment to make my point clear. If we go into Settings tab, expand Alignment and go into Edit Feature Settings you may see where the problem lies. Here are the steps:
1. Open your troubled drawing template
2. In Settings tab, right-click on Alignment node and choose Edit Feature Settings 3. Expand Default Styles section and make sure Alignment (and other object types) has Styles and other defaults assigned. Empty entries, <none> or overrides may indicate possible problem.
4. Set defaults and apply changes
5. Then try to import Land Desktop project into Civil 3D
It is my great pleasure to introduce some of the bloggers that will be posting in the future on Being Civil. When we started back in the fall of 2008 (Brian Kling, Jason Hickey, Justin Ziemba, Seth Hall and I) we were concentrating on Civil 3D and its core functionality. Our goal throughout this entire period was to help our customers and share some of what we know with the rest of us. In order to bring it all to the next level we decided to bring more power to the team of us so that our readers could get a different perspective to the issues we all are facing daily.
In the previous period some people moved to other roles while some others came to replace them. Now, 413 posts and almost 500,000 page views later, have what we are now – Being Civil blog, supporting our infrastructure users around the globe. You can read our posts on Facebook or Twitter or receive them via RSS feeds. It's just a small milestone we have reached and we thought you needed to know about it. We see your support every day and we hope it will continue to grow in the future. If there is something you would like us to blog about please drop us a note and we’ll be happy to help.
You already had a chance to get some of the Map 3D perspective from Nathan Moore, as well as to read some posts about Storm Sewer Analysis (SSA) from Matt and Anurag. Now we are introducing Tatiana Machado and Phil Borycens and I am sure you will be able to get more from them in the nearest future. To learn more about our new additions please visit their own pages on the left (About the authors section). Today it will be Tatiana’s first post on Being Civil. Please join me in welcoming Tatiana and Phil.

This will be like the second part of Add Reset User Settings in Civil 3D 2012 post from back in May of this year. We had some user asking, “OK, I just saved my custom setting... but now what can I do with the ZIP file that is created before resetting my setting and how I can get my settings back?” Well, you would need to do a similar procedure to the one that you did before to create your reset user setting shortcut.
I am one of those that think that an image is worth 1,000 words, so here is a short video that you can follow to get this done.
Today, Autodesk released an AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 Update 1. This update addresses the issues discovered by our customers (thank you all for your help and your patience) and our internal team. A few moths ago, Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler released. It's a pretty amazing evolution of the Galileo project that you may have seen in Labs. Some highlights from the docs:
