Important aspects to define inlets in the model

In SSA, I would like to discuss few things about the inlets which are very important while setting up the inlets in the model. If we miss those parameters and run the analysis it will pop up an analysis errors.

On grade inlets setup in the model always require two outlet links with positive slope. At least, one storm water sewer pipe and a bypass gutter link must be defined. If the Roadway/gutter bypass link, option is undefined we are inviting trouble, so it is important this option should be defined.

In addition, defined bypass link should have a positive slope. If the defined link has an adverse slope, we will not be able to perform analysis successfully. The inlet and the outlet invert elevations should be matched at the rim elevation of the upstream and the downstream connecting nodes for the bypass links. While setting up the median Inlet, attention should be given to the grate width (perpendicular to flow), it should not be greater than the channel bottom width. Again, if the grate width is greater than the channel width, perform analysis will pop up the message “Analysis was unsuccessful.

Upstream Roadway Links contribute surface runoff to the storm drain inlet. Only those links that route surface water runoff to the storm drain inlet opening should be selected. Make sure, bypass links that connect to the storm drain inlet opening and storm water pipes connected to the inlet catchbasin should not be selected in for upstream roadway link. While using on SAG inlets Roadway/gutter bypass link will be always be grayed out.
